Buffalo dental school interview questions

The students who reported about their interview day at the University of Buffalo traveled to the school on the day of the interview, with a parent.
The interview day lasted from about 8:30am-4:30pm.
The University offered no student host program of which these students were aware.

On the interview day, there were one or two interviews, but current medical students conducted no interviews.
Some questions that students reported being asked by interviewers at the University of Buffalo included:

- "Discuss your research experience."
- "What choices might you make in dealing with patients in ethical dilemmas?"
- "What would you do if your patient was a young child with a correctable disease, but the parents were not following through with your treatment schedule?
In this case, the patient is not the one making decisions for himself/herself.
How do you handle it?" (This question was considered the most difficult question asked at the interview)

Besides the interview day, a tour was given of the campus.
Sandwiches were provided for lunch for the interviewees.
Deans and faculty members provided basic information about the campus, the surrounding area, and programs offered by the University.
Students classified this interview day as neutral in difficulty.

University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine Interview

Buffalo was my last scheduled interview prior to December 1st, the AADSAS decision date.
Being in November, it was unlikely that I’d receive any more invitations to interview in the early stages of the application process.
I was lucky to have a connection at the school and in the Buffalo area.
My cousin was in her last year at the ortho program, and lived near the school with her husband and sister.
I made the long drive the night before my interview, arriving after 5 hours in the car.
After relaxing at her home for a while, playing with the dogs and meeting the kitten for the first time, we went out for Thai food.
Michelle, my cousin, had to go to a gathering for the ortho applicants, since they were also in the interview stage of the application process.
She met a 4th year student named Nish who was applying to the ortho program and who said he was on the dental admissions committee.
I had someone to look forward to meeting.
Michelle showed me into the school, and up to the admissions office.
The other applicants and I were shown to a conference room where we’d spend most of our day.
Barbara Weinberg began with a presentation about the school, concentrating on some its highlights, namely its outreaches into the community, both local and global.
It did seem like Buffalo had the most outreaches of any school that I visited, and that it was easy to find a spot on one of the outreaches.
There was also a short presentation on the student assistance that is offered through a special student services office, as well as student organized help.
A note taking service was mentioned, but not explained. I do believe some of the classes are recorded.
The dean also joined us for a moment to give a short speech of the school, which was primarily unmemorable except for the fact that he admitted that the applicant review process is difficult. Buffalo seems to be trying new techniques to choose its students, which is good.
Buffalo was the first school to require a short writing segment.
I hadn’t given a writing sample like this since grade school.
Everything has been on the computer since then.
The short essay question was related to explaining the most rewarding class in your undergraduate studies. Afterward, another student commented that he felt most people would choose organic chemistry, for an effect of sorts.
I hadn’t even thought of this, since organic chemistry was naturally the most rewarding and challenging class I’d taken.
Now it was more of the waiting game. Thankfully, Buffalo had students come in to answer questions while we all waited to be called for our case study and interview.

Dental School Interview Tips & Preparation

For your dental school interview, you should prepare ahead of time.
I understand that this process can be a little nerve-wrecking, but this step is vital is showing the committee who you are, your interest in their dental program, and your professionalism.
It isn't just about your DAT score, GPA, personal statement, or letters of recommendation.
It is about getting to know you and seeing how well you fit in with their envisioned class and whether your characteristics aligns with the schools' vision.

Though the dental school interview process varies from school to school, you can expect:

  • Welcome lectures
  • A campus tour with a group of fellow interviewees (depending on the school, the group size can vary
  • The average interview day lasts 4-6 hours
  • Possibly talk with dental students currently enrolled in the program
  • The actual interview sessions range from school to school from 10 minutes to over 60 minutes, with the average being around 30 minutes. There are individual interviewers (most common and casual talk), multiple interviewers (more formal questions), group activities (like that of USC's). Sometimes your interviewers may be staff, faculty, or even current dental students.
  • Student financial presentations
Now you know a little of what to expect, so come prepared and always put your best foot forward.

Behavioral Interview Questions and Answers

The Behavioral Interview is rapidly becoming the most popular way to interview in the Unites States.
In this method of interviewing the interviewer asks few or no “standard interview questions.” In this style of interviewing the interviewer will ask you to reflect upon you previous work and school experiences, and take him/her through a detailed account as to how a particular situation was handled.

The key to the successful behavioral interview lies in your ability to recount detailed work situations that are directly related to the work at hand. In preparation for a behavioral interview you should conduct a STAR analysis:
S = Name a SITUATION facing you or
T= a TASK you had to complete
A= describe what ACTION you took
R= tell the RESULTS of your actions
You should conduct a STAR Analysis for each of the skills required to perform the position that you are applying for.

Samples of a Behavioral Interview Questions with Answers and explanations
Q. Consider the following situation and describe in detail how you would respond. Your alarm clock doesn’t go off, you wake up, and you are going to be two hours late for work. How would you handle that situation?

A. Once I woke up I would immediately call work, apologize, and let them know what happened and inform them that I was going to be late. I would then call a co-worker and ask them to cover for me until I arrived. Once I arrived I would apologize again and ask if I can stay late or come in early to make up the lost time. Finally, I would buy a new alarm clock to ensure that this did not happen again.

E. In this scenario the applicant would have wowed over the interviewer. The applicant was considering a negative situation. However the applicant turned a negative into a positive. They described a pro-active plan to ensure that losses in productivity did not occur, offered to make up lost time, and made efforts to ensure that the alarm clock would work the next day.

Q. Tell me about a time you had to meet a deadline. Describe the deadline. Describe the steps you took in order to achieve the deadline. Were you successful? Why or why not?

A. A professor assigned a 15 page paper one week before the end of the semester. Being faced with the challenge of meeting this deadline I decided that it would be best to first develop a topic to the paper, then I outlined the paper using my notes and the assigned textbook. I then proceeded to do all of my research for the paper. I then typed the paper, proofread it, and submitted it one day before it was due.

E. This is a good answer to this question. The candidate answered the question in detail and utilized an example where the candidate showed he/she was able to meet deadlines.
